How to Paint Furniture Expresso Black

Expresso black is a popular color for all sorts of furniture, and the color adds a modern touch to any decor. If you're redecorating or have mismatched furniture, don't rush out to buy new pieces. Take a look at what you already have or visit a yard sale, and turn old furniture items into something that looks brand new. You don't have to be an expert to repaint wood furniture, and the dark hue of expresso black will easily cover old finishes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Remove any handles, knobs, or other decorative items from the furniture if possible. You can set these aside to reattach once the paint is dry. If you're painting a chair or bench, remove the upholstered seat cushion or carefully cover it with plastic to prevent getting paint on the fabric. Tape carefully around any mirrors or glass.

    2

Use sandpaper to thoroughly sand all wooden surfaces of the furniture. The key is to remove any flaking paint or glossy finish, and rough up the surface a bit so your new paint will stick. Don't forget to sand any handles or drawer pulls you removed if you plan to paint them.

    3

Wipe down your furniture with a soft cloth to remove all traces of dust and dirt left after sanding.

    4

Use a paintbrush to apply a coat of primer. Use even brush strokes, making sure no bubbles form and all surfaces are covered. Don't be too concerned if the primer looks thinner in some areas, you're covering it with paint anyway. Allow your piece to dry completely. Apply a coat to drawer pulls or handles as well, and set them on a tarp or newspaper to dry. Drying may take several hours; refer to the primer instructions for detailed drying times.

    5

Stir your paint to ensure it is well mixed, then apply a thin, even coat to your furniture using light, even brush strokes. Take care to correct any drips or bubbles that form by brushing back over them. Allow the paint to dry overnight, and inspect your work. If the coating looks thin, apply a second coat. Allow it to dry.

    6

Apply a brush-on or spray-on interior clear protective finish, if desired, according to the manufacturer's instructions. This is recommended for tables or similar items; it will make surfaces much easier to wipe clean and help resist scratches and stains.

    7

Reattach any drawer handles or seat cushions you previously removed.
