How to Make a Hall Tree From a Door

How to Make a Hall Tree From a Door

A hall tree provides a convenient place to hang coats and hats in the front hall or entryway of a home. Many hall trees also have mirrors so you can check your appearance and a bench you can sit on to pull on boots. Instead of a bench, some hall trees have tables that serve as catchalls for mail and other items. You can make a hall tree from an old door and a few other items. It may not be an antique, but it can look like one. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Remove any old finish from the pieces with paint remover and use sandpaper to roughen the surface. Wipe with a cloth. Choose a paint or stain that corresponds to your decor and apply two coats. Paint or stain the door and the bench, chest or table to match. The bench, chest or table should be the same width as the door. Follow with a coat of varnish. Allow to dry between coats.

    2

Attach the bottom of the door to the back of the table, chest or bench with L-brackets and screws. Screw one bracket into each back corner of the table, chest or bench and the other half of the L- bracket into the door.

    3

Attach a mirror to the upper third of the door. Center the mirror at the appropriate height so that an average adult could see his or her face in the mirror when standing in front of the door.

    4

Screw hooks into the door on either side of the mirror. Depending on the width of the door, you might install two or four hooks. The hooks will hold hats, coats and scarves.
