Decorating a Nook Table

Decorating a Nook Table

Nook Tables

Nook tables are small tables set into a nook. The nook can range from a small corner of a hallway to a larger breakfast nook. Most nook tables fill a space in a wall that is small and recessed from the rest of the room.

Because nook tables are small, care must be taken when decorating them. They should not be covered with several unrelated items, as this will only make them look cluttered and messy. Alternately, they should not be left empty, as this will only make that area of the room appear cold and unfinished. Also, consider the area on the wall above the nook table when choosing your decorating theme. It should tie into whatever you place on top of the table to create one cohesive, vertical tableau.

Themes

Before choosing accessories, consider the theme of the room nearest the nook table. If the table is in a nook in the hallway or foyer, you can create a unique theme for the table. If it is part of a larger room, however, you need to make sure that you decorate it in such a way that it matches the rest of the room, which means matching colors and style (formal or casual).

Nook tables in the foyer are usually decorated formally in a way that will impress guests when they first walk into the house. Large flower arrangements placed on the nook table with an elaborately framed mirror hung above it are common in foyers. Nook tables in the hallway are usually decorated more formally, often with photos of family members.

Breakfast Nooks

Nook tables used for dining are larger than wall nook tables and usually have two chairs. They are sometimes placed in a corner, with a bench running along the corner opposite the two chairs. These tables should be decorated in an informal manner, with a casual but pretty centerpiece such as several small bud vases, votive candles or a pretty bowl filled with fruit. The table could be covered with a nice tablecloth or table runner as well, and if there is a window in the nook, matching curtains. Pillows can be set on the chairs to make for festive, comfortable seating.
