How to Construct Large Floral Arrangements

Large flower arrangements add a decorative element to a dining table or entryway table in the home. They are constructed for libraries, funeral homes, weddings, monuments, store displays, cemeteries and church sanctuaries. The arrangements are generally made in large urns, vases or baskets. Silk and fresh flowers are both used in large arrangements. It is a challenge to learn how to construct large floral arrangements. Does this Spark an idea?

Place one to two blocks of floral foam into the container that you have chosen. Add water to the foam and let it soak in for an hour. Set the container on to a work surface that you are able to reach comfortably.

Choose greenery such as cedar, palm fronds or leather leaf and place several pieces at the back of the container. If the floral arrangement will be round or seen from all sides, insert greenery into the center and four sides of the foam at angles.

Cut several line or long-stem fresh flowers such as gladiolus, delphinium, sunflowers, stock, lilies, hydrangea, ginger or orchids with the knife.

Insert a floral stem into the center of the back of the foam. Add two more flower stems at the far left and right side of the first flower. Insert a few more long-stem line flowers into the floral arrangement. Cattails can be added in for height in an autumn arrangement.

Cut several mass flowers such as daisy, rose, alstroemeria, chrysanthemum poms or carnations and add them into the foam between and in front of the tall flowers.

Insert more greenery, small flowers and fillers such as baby's breath, German statice, hypericum berries, asters or Misty Blue into the spaces between the larger flowers in the arrangement. Add an optional finishing touch in the form of a ribbon or lace bow.
