How to Get Rid of Steam Stains on a Table

Steam stains on a table result in a mark that appears bleached or white in nature. Whether from a hot dish out of the oven or steam from an iron, the wood absorbs moisture from the steam, causing the light-colored stain. Steam and water stains appear to be permanent because wood cleaners or other surface cleaners do not remove them. The key to removing steams stains and getting rid of the discoloration is to draw the moisture out of the wood. Does this Spark an idea?

    Place a dry cotton cloth over the site of the steam stain on your table. Warm your clothing iron to the lowest heat setting. Over the course of a few minutes place the iron on the cotton cloth for 5 to 10 seconds at a time to absorb the moisture from the wood and remove the stain.

    Combine 1 tbsp. each mayonnaise and ashes from cigarettes or cigars. Stir the two ingredients together with a spoon.

    Dip a clean cotton cloth in the mayonnaise and ash mixture and rub it into the remaining steam stain on the table. Leave the mixture on the wood for a few minutes then wipe it off with a clean cloth. Alternate applying the mayonnaise mixture and wiping it off after a few minutes until the remnants of the stain are lifted.

    Pour one capful of oil-based soap into a bucket and add 1/2 gallon warm water. Wash off the surface of your table with the mild soap solution to remove oil from the mayonnaise. Dampen a clean cloth with water and wipe off the table to rinse.

    Dry your table with a clean, dry cloth. Buff to a shine, if desired.
