How to Cut Table Cloths

Tablecloths are large textiles that cover the top surface of a table. If you have an expensive table and you want to protect its wooden surface you should cover it with a tablecloth. A tablecloth will protect the wood from wear and tear and it is also an excellent way to decorate a table. Making your own tablecloth can be a rewarding experience, and it can also save you a lot of money.

Instructions

Rectangular or Oblong Tablecloth

Measure the length and width of your table using a measuring tape. Add an extra 15 inches to your measurements to have adequate overhang for the tablecloth.

Choose a pattern and color for the tablecloth. The tablecloth's color should not be too different from the color of other items in the dining room to create harmony between colors.

Mark up the fabric with chalk according to the measurements you have taken of the table. Cut the fabric along the chalk marks using a pair of scissors.

Wash the tablecloth fabric before you start sewing it to avoid shrinkage later.

Bind the edge of the tablecloth by folding in 1/2 inch of the tablecloth's edge and ironing it down. Insert straight pins to hold down the folded edge during sewing. Sew the folded-over edge using a sewing machine.

Iron the tablecloth before you put it on the table.

Round Tablecloth

Measure the table's surface. Measure the distance between the widest parts of the round table and add 15 inches to your measurements to allow for the fabric to hang over the table's edge.

Choose a fabric that compliments your dining room or kitchen colors. Fold the fabric into fours or quarters. Mark a semi-circular line on the cloth using a chalk. Cut off the edges of the fabric along the chalk mark. Make sure you cut the edge off and not the folded sides of the cloth.
