How Big Should an Area Rug Be Under a Table?

How Big Should an Area Rug Be Under a Table?

Measure and Visualize

Leave 24 inches of rug all around the edge of the table to allow room for chairs to stay on the rug while they move in and out. Arrange the furniture, and visualize how the room will look with the rug; you may want to move the furniture for the proportions to look right.

Be Adventurous

Rugs come in standard sizes, but not all rooms are perfectly square. You may need to arrange the table to one side of the rug instead of on top of it. Irregularly shaped spaces may look better with circular rugs.

Bottom Line

No set rules exist for decorating with area rugs. In general, you don't want a disproportionately small one or one so large that it overpowers your table. Interior designer Susan Welch Heeney, writing at DesignStudio.com, says, "All legs on, or all legs off is a good 'rule of thumb' to keep in mind."
