How to Crochet a Table Runner

Table runners add a decorative touch to tables. These runners range from simple rectangles to lacy and elaborate and can be made in any color imaginable to match your style and color palette. Crochet is a craft that uses a single hook to pull yarn through itself to make the finished product--and does take some practice to learn--but it results in some beautiful table runners. Even a basic crocheted table runner will enhance your decor.

Plan your project. Choose a pattern for your table runner. There are free ones available online as well as booklets full of patterns that can be purchased at your local craft store. A simple pattern is best for beginners. Choose your yarn. If using more than one color, ensure that you like how the colors look together. Work with one color to start.

Measure your table. Youll want the table runner to be the length of your table plus about 10 inches so you have 5 extra inches to hang down on either side. Get the correct size crochet hook for your pattern.

Crochet a swatch to be used to determine your gauge--this helps you estimate the size of your finished piece. If you need to adjust the size of your hook to match the gauge of your pattern, then go with a smaller hook to make the swatch smaller and use a larger hook to make the swatch larger. Once youve determine the proper size hook, begin to crochet according to your pattern. For the example, use a size H hook, and chain 50. This will be the width of your runner. For your gauge, 10 stitches should be equal to 1 inch.

Follow the instructions in your pattern. For the example: Row 1--Double crochet in the third chain from the hook and in every chain across. Chain two and turn. Row 2: Double crochet eight stitches and then chain two. Skip the next two stitches and then double crochet in the next eight stitches. Chain two, skip two and double crochet eight across the remaining stitches of the row. Chain two and turn. Row 3: Double crochet three stitches and then chain two. Skip the next two stitches and then double crochet in the next eight stitches. Chain two, skip two, and double crochet eight in the remaining stitches across until five stitches remain in the row. Chain two, skip two, and then three double crochet to finish the row. Chain two and turn.

Continue to follow the instructions in your pattern and finish off as directed. For the example, repeat rows 2 and 3, alternating them until the table runner has reached the desired length. Cut the yarn and pull through the loop to finish. Hide the ends of your yarn by weaving them through the completed stitches with a yarn needle.
