How to Shop on New York's Upper East Side

Manhattans Upper East Side is where some of the wealthiest New Yorkers live and it's also where they shop. You might not be able to live there, but no one can stop you from shopping there. Even if you cant afford some of the high prices, its fun to browse and even try on a few things. The Upper East Side is bounded by 59th and 110th Streets and the East River and Central Park East.

    The Conran Shop

    Feast your eyes on the textiles, home furnishings and kitchenware at the Conran Shop, 407 E. 59th St., at First Ave. Youll feel like youre in a modern art museum at the two-story modernist store, which focuses on home design with a selection of Eames chairs and Noguchi coffee tables. You can also find funky electronics, vases, desk accessories, gifts, textiles, lighting, linens and top-of-the-line kitchen supplies.

    Bloomingdale's

    Stop in your tracks when you reach the legendary Bloomingdales, at 1000 Third Ave. and 59th St. The landmark department store has been catering to sophisticated New York shoppers since 1886. Here, you can find stylish but affordable lines and nearly every designer in the universe, from Burberry to Michael Kors, and then some. When you've worked up an appetite--and you will--lunch at any one of four restaurants in the store.

    Barney's New York

    Visit Barneys New York, at 660 Madison Ave., near the intersection of 61st St. This store, a favorite of many New Yorkers and the characters on TVs Will & Grace," is a sophisticated designer department store. You can find clothing from cult designers like Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs and Prada in this 9-floor store. Check out Fred's, the top-floor restaurant and bar, and the Barneys industrial style Co-Op department, featuring edgy, funkier styles.

    Browse through the distinctive clothing and accessories at Anne Klein New York, 655 Madison Ave., at 60th St. The flagship store carries signature Anne Klein items, including her sleek suits and career dresses, handbags, tailored belts and classic pumps. The store is sophisticated and plush and the sales staff is extremely helpful.

    Satisfy your shoe fetish at Nadine and David, 1029 Third Ave., at 61st St., where you can try on Nadine Levensons wild and fun shoes and accessories. You will find one-of-a-kind items at Nadine and David, because many of the items are designed by Nadine herself or purchased from small European makers. Expect to see crocodile, leopard-print and more.

    Lose yourself in the beautiful wares at Shanghai Tang, 714 Madison Ave., near the intersection of 63rd St., where youll find modern Chinese chic clothing and accessories. Youll marvel at the painstaking attention to detail and craftsmanship involved in the creation of this clothing for men, women and children, along with a line of home furnishings and gifts.

    Play the diva at Giorgio Armani, 760 Madison Ave., near 65th St., a four-floor wonderland of Italian style. This beautiful store, complete with its doorman, dark wood floors and marble walls, carries Armanis power suits, beaded evening dresses, cocktail dresses, tuxes, and more. Evening wear, located on the fourth floor, includes red-carpet gowns and mens evening wear. The dressing rooms in this store are bigger than some apartments.

    Marimekko

    Enjoy the brilliant fabric, textiles and clothing at Marimekko, 1262 Third Ave., near 73rd St. Marimekko, a Finnish company known for its graphic color, will overwhelm your senses with its distinctive linens and table settings, its funky clothing and fun accessories.

    Try on some oversized sunglasses, among other delectable things, at designer Michael Kors boutique, 974 Madison Ave., at 76th St. This store for the jet set caters to the designers glamorous followers and you can partake as well. Check out the bikini collection, his distinctive jeans and his one-of-a-kind sportswear separates. This store carries only womens clothing and accessories, but men can enjoy the comfy chairs and coffee table books while they wait.

    Vera Wang on Madison Avenue

    Be a bride at the unforgettable Vera Wang, 991 Madison Ave., at 77th St. Wang offers gowns for every kind of bride, from simple lines to showstopper gowns, complete with layers and ruffles. Made-to-order dresses are available and try to visit during the designers sample sales in June and December. The story also carries ready-to-wear fashion, fragrance, eyewear, footwear, lingerie, fine papers, jewelry and home collections.

    Enjoy designer thrift at the Spence-Chapin Thrift Shop, 1473 Third Ave., at 83rd St. The Thrift Shop gets its stock from the designer and high-quality castoffs of the blueblood families who send their youngsters to the Spence and Chapin Schools in Manhattan (Gwyneth Paltrow is a Spence alum). It's all for a good cause, since the proceeds are donated to charity. Youll find Lauren, Lacoste, Prada, Miu-Miu, Herrara, Marc Jacobs and more in this jam-packed store.
