How to Build a Playing Table for Legos

How to Build a Playing Table for Legos

Create a playing table for your child so he can create with LEGO bricks for hours and keep them all together in one place. The playing table will keep the LEGO toys within your child's reach and on a flat surface so buildings, vehicles and other structures can stand without toppling. For young children, cover the table top with LEGO plates to provide them with a more stable starting point. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Cut a piece of plywood to a 4 feet by 4 feet square to make the LEGO tabletop.

    2

Determine how tall the table should be. Make it so your child is able to stand and reach the table easily. Cut the 4-by-4s to this height. Set one at each corner, butting it up to the very edge of the plywood. Screw through the plywood and into the posts to create legs for your table.

    3

Cut the 2-by-4s into 4 feet 2 inch lengths to make side rails for your table. The side rails keep the LEGO toys on the table surface.

    4

Position one side rail so it's butted up against one end and extending 2 inches from the other end of the table. Locate it so it's extending above the table surface by 1 inch. Screw through the side rail and into the leg posts to secure it into position. Do this on all four sides to finish the side rails.

    5

Apply small L brackets in two places on each side to pull the plywood tabletop snug to the side rails. Screw through the plywood top and into the brackets on the top, and through the L brackets and into the side rails from underneath.

    6

Add support to the table legs with 2-by-2s cut to 4 feet 4 inch lengths. Put supports on both sides and the back of the table. Set the 2-by-2s midway between the floor and the tabletop on the inside of the table. Center the supports between the two legs. Screw through the 2-by-2s and into the legs to secure them.

    7

Cover the tabletop with construction adhesive and tile the tabletop with LEGO plates. The plates are 16 inches square and will fit perfectly on the table, covering it completely.

    8

Staple the mesh bags to the table. Make sure the mesh is small enough to hold the LEGO pieces inside. Hold the top of the bag to the top of the table and staple through the bag and into the table, securing it into place.Put one bag on each corner on the front of the table. Fill the mesh bags with LEGO pieces.
